»panta rhei – everything flows«
„What does »panta rhei« mean?“
This question is quite frequently asked by students hearing the name ‘panta rhei‘ for the first time. Well, this intriguing title of our ecumenical cafe – run jointly by the KHG and ESG in the Studentenhaus – has a long history and can be traced back to ancient Greek! Literally, it means ‘everything flows‘ – or more formally, ‘everything is in a state of flux‘. True enough. That’s life! Anyway, the name adorns the walls of our cafe, which is an oasis amidst the hectic life of the University outside. Inside the cafe there is always a relaxing flow of refreshment and conversation amidst the constant comings and goings of our students dropping in for a well-earned break or maybe staying longer just to chill out! Very much ‘panta rhei‘!
There is always an ample supply of cookies and fair trade-coffee – whatever your preference: filter, espresso, latte machiato or cappucino – together with tea and a variety of other beverages including fizzy drinks. There is generally one of our charming student assistants on hand to cater to your needs ‑all at a very reasonable price!
You are all cordially invited to join us, no matter whether you are a freshman or a more mature student, no matter whether you feel like talking or prefer to sit in a corner and read – or maybe just have forty winks! Whatever your preference, you will have the opportunity to meet people with very different personalities and outlooks. There will be younger and older students from various faculties in the the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences. education, law, medicine etc. As you can imagine, this mix has sometimes triggered fiery exchanges! If you just don’t want to chat or discuss, there is a wide variety of board games to choose from.
Mondays through Thursdays from 12.00 to 17.00, you will find a full-time student assistant on hand should any questions or issues arise. They will lend a sympathetic ear. We very much appreciate these full-time assistants, who, incidentally, also have other duties in the KHG and ESG. We are grateful too to the volunteers who help to run the cafe.
Drop in and get into the swim! Panta rhei!
